Local Spotlight #19 - The Almeida Theatre In Spring

Islington is a hub of culture and arts, and we are beyond fortunate with the amount of wonderful theatres that surrounds our hostel. This week we have chosen to highlight the Almedia Theatre. Located just a short 15 minute walk away from Prime Backpackers, off the main road, along a beautiful blossom tree street rests this wonderful theatre, its the perfect spotlight!

Discover our local spotlight, The Almedia Theatre.

  1. How The Almedia Began

The Almeida actually began life as a literary and scientific society, complete with a library, lecture theatre and even a laboratory. “From the beginning, our building existed to investigate the world.”

Today however, it’s a theatre space for plays and musicals, complete with an onsite café.

2. What The Almedia is About

They aim to bring together the most exciting artists, asking them “to take risks; to provoke, inspire and surprise” the audiences; “to interrogate the present, dig up the past and imagine the future.” Whether this be a new work or reinvigorated classic.

Ultimately The Almeida strives to argue that theatre is a critical force in an increasingly fragmented society.

3. Why We Love It

Unlike most big London theatres this space is small and intermit, but with a world wide reputation. As being small doesn’t mean famous faces have shied away…from Saoirse Ronan, Tom Hollander and the sexy priest himself Andrew Scott have graced the stage of The Almedia. The location also makes it an automatic favourite of ours!
